Photo of VolunteersGet a behind the scenes view of all the work that goes into making this event a success. Volunteers provide support along the Death Ride® course, as well as days prior to and after the event. Many riders and non-riders show their support for the event by volunteering for a position. This army, The Skeleton Squad, is a large part of what makes the Death Ride® so successful. We can't do it without you!

All Volunteers must sign up by Friday 06/28/13. No sign ups will be taken on-line after 06/28/13.

Sign-Up For the Skeleton Squad:
Find what job fits your schedule best from the list below, then fill out the Skeleton Squad Sign Up Form
at the bottom of the page. There are several different dates and job locations along the course to choose from. You may choose up to three options on the form below. We ask that a volunteer commit to at least 4 hours of service. Some job times can be flexible and may vary due to work volume. Camping in some areas within road closures is suggested. All volunteers should bring layers of clothing, water bottle and snacks. For safety purposes, no children under 10 years of age can volunteer. Volunteer to Ride Program:
Volunteer to Ride gives riders an opportunity to volunteer their time and then be able to ride in the Death Ride
®. The 2013 Volunteer To Ride Program is now full. Entries are non-transferable. A non-refundable registration fee of $120 will be due when you sign up. As a Volunteer to Ride Program participant you will be contacted thru email by the Volunteer Coordinator. A minimum commitment of 8 hours of work will be required and must be completed before rider can check in and pick up their bib/bike number at registration. A Volunteer to Ride Program Confirmation signed by a captain is required at time of registration, please contact the Death Ride® with any additional questions. Spaces are limited and fill up quickly.

ADVANCED WARNING SIGN CREW

Event organizers are required to post advance warning signs for motorists on highways affected by event 2 weeks in advance. Sign locations are already determined and clearly marked on and beyond actual course. Purpose of signs is to give motorists a heads up highway 89 and 4 will be closed July 14, 2012. Crew of at least two would be erecting signs on 4x4 posts. Heavy lifting and truck required. Mileage will be reimbursed by event organizers. Please wear proper clothing. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip-flops.

A friendly social personality fits this job best. Key duties include checking in riders, issuing rider numbers, assuring accuracy on all forms and filing important registration and liability information. This job can be stressful during busy times. Location at Turtle Rock Park. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled shift for orientation.

RETAIL STORE & 5 PASS FINISHER JERSEY ORDERS

Key duties include setting up the store, credit card handling, customer service, inventory of items, display set up and selling general or specialty merchandise. Some heavy lifting may be required. SIGN PLACEMENT CREW

Key duties include assisting the Course Coordinator to accurately set up or take down signs along the route. Extremely physical duty, heavy lifting required. Please wear proper clothing. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip-flops. Bring water bottle and snacks. Lunch is provided.


PARKING
Fri, 07/12 (11:00am-7:00pm)
Sat, 07/13 (2:00am-6:00am) Rolling Light Tower

Key duties include directing vehicles to parking spaces and giving out information as riders are arriving to registration on Friday. 2am shift will be walking with rolling light tower to park cars of riders ready to participate in event. You will be outside so wear layers, bring sun block, hat and water bottle.

TRUCK LOADING

Key duties include packing up the trucks with supplies. Heavy lifting required. Please wear proper clothing. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip-flops.


COURSE FOOD DELIVERY

Note: Times are flexible and may vary due to work volume, please be available to stay later if necessary.

3 teams of 2 people needed to drive and unload at designated rest stops on event course. Prefer drivers with knowledge of course, valid driver's license and heavy lifting required. Trucks, gloves and dinner provided.

ICE DELIVERY

Load block and chipped bags of ice into truck and deliver on course. Early hours because of road closures. Prefer drivers with knowledge of course, valid driver's license and heavy lifting required. Trucks, gloves and breakfast or lunch provided. Please wear proper clothing. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip-flops.


CLEAN UP
Sun, 07/14 (9:00am-5:00pm)
Volunteer to help clean up on Sunday after the ride and earn a guaranteed spot in the 2014 Death Ride
®! Key duties include inventory and restocking of supplies and equipment, cleaning and break down. Help make a positive print on the environment with this clean up effort. Heavy lifting required. Please wear proper clothing. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip-flops.

These volunteer jobs will put you in the hub of all the action. See your loved ones or enjoy the masses taking on the challenge of the ride. Please note these schedules are not flexible. Spending Friday night camping at various locations (Wolf Creek, Monitor & Ebbetts Passes) is preferred, check with your Captain.

BIB CHECKER
Sat, 07/13 Whorehouse Flat (4 miles south of Markleeville), (4:30am-7:30am)
Organized & Benefits: Valley Christian Fellowship
Key duties include verifying every rider has a yellow bib number attached to bike and white bib on their person, safety, and controlling the flow of bike traffic. Set up and breakdown of cones and signs that direct the flow of traffic at intersections along with verbal direction. Wear layers as morning is usually cold. Bring snacks and water.

HEENAN

Rest Stop
Elevation: 7,084 feet
Organized & Benefits: Big Daddy's Bike, Ski & Board

MONITOR PASS

The 1st Pass & Rest Stop
Elevation: 8,314 feet
Organized & Benefits: Boy Scout Troop 495 Minden, NV

See the riders twice! Located on the top of Highway 89. Key duties include setting up area, issuing one sticker per rider, snack preparation, and breaking down along with cleaning the area after the riders are done. Friendly interaction and encouragement to the riders is also essential. Monitor Pass is closed to traffic 5:00am to 12:00pm.
Camping overnight is recommended at this stop. Please wear proper clothing. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip-flops.


TOPAZ
Sat, 07/13 (4:00am-12:00pm)
The 2nd Pass & Rest Stop
Elevation: 5,300 feet
Organized & Benefits: Sierra Sagebrush Flyers

Topaz is located at the junction of Highway 89 & Highway 395. This is the turn around spot for Monitor / Highway 89. The riders head back up Monitor Pass. Key duties include setting up area, issuing one sticker per rider, snack preparation, and breaking down along with cleaning the area after the riders are done. Friendly interaction and encouragement to the riders is also essential. Monitor Pass is closed to traffic 5:00am to 12:00pm. Highway 395 is accessible to rest stop with no traffic restrictions.

SCOSSA'S

Elevation: 6,200 feet

Organized & Benefits: Douglas High School Football Team

EBBETTS PASS

The 3rd Pass & Rest Stop
Elevation: 8,730 feet
Organized & Benefits: Arnold Rim Trail Association

This pass is on Highway 4, a National Scenic Byway. You might see the riders make it here twice! Key duties include setting up area, issuing one sticker per rider, snack preparation, and breaking down along with cleaning the area after the riders are done. Friendly interaction and encouragement to the riders is also essential. Ebbetts Pass / Highway 4 is closed to traffic from 5:00am to 3:00pm. Camping overnight is recommended at this stop. Please wear proper clothing. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip-flops.


HERMIT VALLEY
Sat, 07/13 (4:00am-3:00pm)
The 4th Pass & Rest Stop
Elevation: 7,200 feet
Organized & Benefits: Bear Valley Fire & Bear Valley EMS

This pass is on Highway 4, a National Scenic Byway. This is the turn-around spot for riders before they head back up Ebbetts Pass. Key duties include setting up area, issuing one sticker per rider, snack preparation, and breaking down along with cleaning the area after the riders are done. Friendly interaction and encouragement to the riders is also essential. Ebbetts Pass / Highway 4 is closed to traffic from 5:00am to 3:00pm.
Camping overnight is recommended at this stop. Please wear proper clothing. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip-flops.


WOLFCREEK/CENTERVILLE FLAT

Lunch Stop

Elevation: 5,927 feet
Organized & Benefits: Boy Scout Troop 226
This stop is on Highway 4, a National Scenic Byway. This is the lunch stop! This stop can get hectic during lunch hours (10:00am - 3:00pm). Key duties include setting up area, lunch preparation, and breaking down along with cleaning the area after the riders are done. Friendly interaction and encouragement to the riders is also essential. Ebbetts Pass / Highway 4 is closed to traffic 5:00am to 3:00pm. Set up the night before is helpful so camping is recommended.

WOODFORDS
Sat, 07/13 (10:00am-5:00pm)
Rest Stop
Organized & Benefits: Eastern Alpine Fire & Rescue

This stop is on the way to Carson Pass. Key duties include setting up area, snack preparation, and breaking down along with cleaning the area after the riders are done. Friendly interaction and encouragement to the riders is also essential. Highway 88 is open to vehicle traffic at all times.
Please wear proper clothing. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip-flops.


WOODFORDS CALLERS
Sat, 07/13 (12:00pm-5:00pm)
Three teams of two people each will be assigned a designated location by event organizers in Woodfords Canyon on Highway 88. Duties include verbally reminding riders to ride single file and cheering them on as they pass. Friendly interaction and encouragement to the riders is also essential. Highway 88 is open to vehicle traffic at all times. Orange vests, megaphones and pom poms are provided.

PICKETTS
Sat, 07/13 (10:00am-6:00pm)
Rest Stop
Organized & Benefits: Tahoe Turning Point

This stop is on the way to Carson Pass. Key duties include setting up area, snack preparation, and breaking down along with cleaning the area after the riders are done. Friendly interaction and encouragement to the riders is also essential. Highway 88 is open to vehicle traffic at all times.

CARSON PASS

The 5th Pass & Rest Stop
Elevation: 8,580 feet
Organized & Benefits: Kirkwood Volunteer Fire Department

A little more than half of the riders can make it to this distinguished pass. Key duties include setting up area, issuing one sticker per rider, snack preparation, and breaking down along with cleaning the area after the riders are done. Friendly interaction and encouragement to the riders is very essential since this is the home stretch. Highway 88 is open to vehicle traffic at all times.
